Pretending to Believe Muhammad full verses back to top

They say, “We believe in Allah and the Messenger, and we obey.” But then a group among them turns away; these are not true believers.

When they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, some turn away.

But if the truth is in their favour, they come willingly.

Is there a sickness in their hearts? Or do they doubt? Or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger will be unjust to them? No, it is they who are the wrongdoers.

When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink in aversion. But when others are mentioned besides Him, they rejoice.

When the hypocrites come to you, they say, “We bear witness that you are truly Allah’s Messenger.” Allah knows you are His Messenger, but Allah also bears witness that the hypocrites are liars.

They use their oaths as a shield and turn others away from Allah’s path. What a wretched thing they do.

That is because they believed, then disbelieved, so their hearts were sealed, and they cannot understand.

When you see them, their appearance impresses you; and when they speak, you listen attentively. But they are like hollow logs propped up, thinking every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah curse them; how deluded they are.

When it is said to them, “Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you,” they turn their heads away, and you see them arrogantly turning aside.

It is the same whether you ask forgiveness for them or not; Allah will never forgive them. Truly, Allah does not guide the rebellious.

They are the ones who say, “Do not spend on those with the Messenger of Allah until they abandon him.” But to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, yet the hypocrites do not understand.

They say, “If we return to Medina, the more honoured will surely expel the more humble.” But honour belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, yet the hypocrites do not know.

Do not let their words distress you. All power belongs to Allah.

Satan enticed full verses back to top

Those who turn back after guidance has been made clear to them, Satan has enticed them and prolonged false hopes for them.

That is because they said to those who detest what Allah revealed, “We will obey you in some matters.” But Allah knows their secrets.

Reproaching Hypocrites full verses back to top

The hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, “Their faith has deceived them.”

The hypocrites fear that a revelation will expose what is in their hearts. Say, “Mock if you wish, Allah will bring to light what you fear.”

If you ask them, they will say, “We were only joking and playing.” Say, “Was it Allah, His signs, and His Messenger that you were mocking?”

Do not make excuses, you have already disbelieved after believing. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others for their wrongdoing.

The hypocrites, men and women, are alike. They enjoin evil, forbid good, and withhold generosity. They neglect Allah, so He neglects them. The hypocrites are truly rebellious.

Allah has promised the hypocrites and disbelievers the Fire of Hell

You are like those before you; they were stronger, wealthier, and had more children. They enjoyed their share, and you enjoy yours just as they did. You indulge as they indulged. Their deeds became worthless, and they were ruined.

They swear by Allah that they did not say anything, but they did utter words of disbelief and rejected faith after embracing it. They plotted what they could not achieve. They resent that Allah and His Messenger enriched them. If they repent, it will be better for them. But if they turn away

Tidings full verses back to top

Give news to the hypocrites: a painful punishment awaits them.

Never think the disbelievers can escape Allah’s reach on earth.

Do not think that those who rejoice in their misdeeds and love to be praised for what they have not done will escape punishment.

Is one whose heart Allah has opened to Islam, so he walks in light from his Lord, like one who is hardened?

Stirring Trouble full verses back to top

They say, “We obey,” but when they leave you, a group of them plots against what you have said. Allah records their schemes, so ignore them and trust in Him.

When news of security or fear reaches them, they spread it without thought. If they had referred it to the Messenger or those in authority, those who analyze matters would have understood it.

Deception full verses back to top

Among people are those who claim belief in Allah and the Last Day, yet they are not truly believers.

They seek to deceive Allah and the faithful, but in reality, they deceive only themselves without realizing it.

When told, 'Do not spread corruption on the earth,' they insist, 'We are only reformers!'

But truly, they are the ones causing harm, though they fail to perceive it.

When they meet the believers, they claim, 'We believe,' but when alone with their allies, they say, 'We are with you; we were only pretending.'

Turning Away full verses back to top

The time of people’s judgment has drawn near, yet they remain heedless, turning away.

When they are told, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turn away in defiance.

Yet those who disbelieve turn away from what they are warned of.

But if they turn away, say, “I have warned you plainly. I do not know whether what you are promised is near or far.”

But if they turn away, your duty is only to deliver the message clearly.

Say, “Who can protect you from the Most Merciful by night or day?” Yet they turn away from His remembrance.

But We have brought them their reminder, yet they turn away from it.

No sign ever comes to them from their Lord without them turning away from it.

Belief in Parts full verses back to top

Those who reject Allah and His messengers, seeking to divide faith, believing in some while denying others, are truly misguided.

Fickle Minded full verses back to top

Yet they play about, lost in doubt.

So, watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke

Enveloping the people, “This is a painful torment!”

They will cry, “Our Lord, lift the torment from us, we will surely believe!”

How will it be when disaster strikes them for what their hands have done? Then they will come to you, swearing by Allah, saying, ‘We only meant good and reconciliation.’

Allah knows what is in their hearts, so ignore them, advise them, and speak to them in a way that reaches their souls.

And indeed, among you is one who will hold back, dragging his feet, then if hardship strikes you, he says, 'Ah, how gracious was Allah to me, that I was not there to witness their fate.'"

If fortune comes your way, they say, as if no bond ever existed between you, ‘Oh, I wish I had been with them to gain such success!’

Man never tires of asking for good, but when adversity touches him, he despairs and loses hope.

When We grant favour to man, he turns away and distances himself, but when hardship touches him, he is full of prayers.

Among people are those who say, “We believe in Allah,” but when they are harmed for His sake, they equate people’s persecution with Allah’s punishment. Yet if help comes from your Lord, they say, “We were with you all along.” Does Allah not know what is in the hearts of all people?

Allah will surely distinguish the believers and expose the hypocrites.

When hardship touches a person, he calls upon Us. But when We grant him a favour, he says, "I received this because of my knowledge." No, it is only a test, though most do not realize.

Those before them said the same, yet what they earned did not benefit them.

You will see the wrongdoers fearful of what they have earned, and it will inevitably befall them.

Indeed, the human being was created anxious

When touched by hardship, fretful

And when touched by good, withholding

The wrongdoers will soon know what fate awaits them.

The consequences of their deeds came upon them, and the wrongdoers among them will face the same. They cannot escape.

Yet if they turn away, We did not send you as a guardian over them. Your duty is only to convey. When We let man taste mercy, he rejoices in it, but when hardship befalls him due to his own actions, he despairs.

When hardship touches people, they call upon their Lord, turning to Him. But when He grants them mercy, some of them associate others with Him

Denying what We have given them. So, enjoy yourselves for a while, you will soon know.

When We grant people mercy, they rejoice in it. But when hardship strikes because of what their hands have done, they despair.

Have they not seen that Allah extends provision to whom He wills and restricts it?

Deceiving Allah full verses back to top

Those who wait for your downfall, if victory comes to you, they claim allegiance; but if the disbelievers succeed, they say, “Did we not side with you?” Allah will judge between you all on the Day of Resurrection, and He will never grant the disbelievers power over the believers.

The hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He turns their deception against them. When they stand for prayer, they do so lazily, only to be seen by others, remembering Allah but little.

They waver between belief and disbelief, belonging neither here nor there.

Fighting full verses back to top

Except for those who seek refuge with a people bound to you by a treaty, or those who come to you with hearts unwilling to fight either you or their own people. Had Allah willed, He could have empowered them against you, and they would have fought you. So, if they withdraw, refuse to fight, and offer peace, then Allah does not permit you to harm them.

Punish full verses back to top

Surely, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of Hell, and you will find no helper for them.

We offered the Trust to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, but they shrank from bearing it, fearful of its weight. Yet humanity took it on, truly, they are ever prone to wrongdoing and ignorance.

So that Allah may punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the idolaters, men and women, and turn in mercy to the believers, men and women.
