Eat full verses back to top

O humanity, worship your Lord, the One who created you and those before you, so that you may attain righteousness.

He made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a canopy, sending down rain to bring forth fruits as sustenance.

O believers, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah.

O humanity, eat from what is lawful and good on the earth

O children of Adam! Dress well at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but do not be excessive.

Lawful full verses back to top

All food was lawful for the Children of Israel except what they forbade themselves before the Torah was revealed.

Among livestock are those that carry burdens and those that do not. Eat of what Allah has provided

O believers! Honour your commitments. Livestock is made lawful for you, except what is explicitly forbidden. Do not hunt while in a state of pilgrimage.

O believers! Do not violate sacred rites, the sacred months, the offerings, or those journeying to the Sacred House seeking their Lord’s favour. Once you leave the pilgrimage state, you may hunt. But do not let hatred toward those who barred you from the Sacred Mosque lead you to injustice. Cooperate in righteousness, not in sin and hostility.

Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, pork, and animals sacrificed to other than Allah. Also forbidden are animals killed by strangling, impact, falling, goring, or partially eaten by predators, unless you slaughter them properly. Sacrifices made on stone altars and divination by arrows are sinful. Today, disbelievers have lost hope in your faith; fear only Me. Today, I have perfected your religion, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam for you. But if one is compelled by hunger without intent to sin.

They ask what is lawful, say: All good things are permitted, including what trained hunting animals catch for you. Eat what they retrieve, mentioning Allah’s name over it.

Today, all good things are lawful, including the food of the People of the Book, and your food is lawful for them.

Not Forbidden full verses back to top

They say, “These livestock and crops are forbidden, none may eat them except whom we will.” And some livestock they forbid from carrying loads, and others they do not mention Allah’s name over, fabricating lies against Him.

They say, “What is in the wombs of these animals is reserved for our men, but forbidden to our women.” But if it is stillborn, they all share in it. He will repay them for their claims.

He created eight pairs: two of sheep, two of goats. Say, “Has He forbidden the males or the females, or what their wombs contain? Tell me with knowledge, if you are truthful.”

And of camels, two; and of cattle, two. Say, “Has He forbidden the males or the females, or what their wombs contain? Or were you present when Allah commanded this?” Who is more unjust than one who fabricates lies against Allah to mislead others without knowledge?

Say, “I find nothing forbidden in what has been revealed to me except carrion, spilled blood, pork, for it is impure, or that slaughtered in defiance, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled, without desire or excess.

Forbidden full verses back to top

He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled by necessity, without desire or transgression, there is no sin upon him.

To the Jews, We forbade every animal with an uncloven hoof, and of cattle and sheep, We forbade their fat, except what adheres to their backs, entrails, or bones. This was their recompense for their wrongdoing.

We forbade certain things to the Jews, and We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves.

He was grateful for Allah’s blessings, and Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path.

Intoxicants full verses back to top

And from the fruits of date palms and grapes, you extract intoxicants and wholesome sustenance. Surely, in this is a sign for those who understand.

O believers, do not approach prayer while intoxicated until you understand what you say.

They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, 'There is great sin in both, though they have some benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.'

O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous offerings, and divining arrows are vile works of Satan, so avoid them that you may succeed.

Satan seeks to sow enmity and hatred among you through wine and gambling, and to turn you away from remembrance of Allah and prayer. Will you not then refrain?

Various full verses back to top

Those who believe and do good are not blamed for what they consumed before, so long as they remain mindful, believe, and act righteously.

O believers! Allah will test you with game within reach of your hands and spears, so He may distinguish those who fear Him unseen.

O you who have committed yourselves to faith: do not hunt while in the sacred state of pilgrimage. If any of you deliberately kills game, then a just recompense must be made, an offering of equivalent livestock, judged by two trustworthy among you, to be delivered to the Ka‘bah; or instead, feed the poor, or fast in proportion.

Lawful for you is the catch of the sea and its food as provision for you and travellers, but forbidden is land game while in pilgrimage.

Feeding the Poor full verses back to top

And they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive

Saying, “We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We seek neither reward nor thanks from you.

Fasting full verses back to top

O believers, fasting is prescribed for you as it was for those before you, so that you may develop mindfulness.

Fast for a fixed number of days. But if any of you are ill or on a journey, then make up the days later. And for those who can only fast with hardship, they may compensate by feeding a needy person. But whoever volunteers more, it is better for them. Fasting is best for you, if only you knew.

The month of Ramadan is when the Quran was revealed, a guidance for humanity, with clear proofs of guidance and discernment. So, whoever witnesses the month should fast. But if anyone is ill or traveling, let them make up the days later. Allah desires ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and glorify Him for guiding you, and so that you may be grateful.

Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread of night. Then complete the fast until nightfall.

Sacrificed Animals full verses back to top

In them (the animals) are benefits for you for a time, then their place is by the Ancient House.

For every nation We appointed rites, so they may mention Allah’s name over the livestock He provided.

And the sacrificial animals, We made them among Allah’s symbols for you. In them is good. So, mention Allah’s name over them as they are lined up, then when they fall on their sides, eat from them and feed the content and the needy. Thus, We made them subject to you, so you may be grateful.

Neither their flesh nor their blood reaches Allah, but your piety does. Thus, He subjected them to you so you may glorify Allah for what He has guided you to.
