Time/Hour full verses back to top

They ask you about the Hour, when will it come? Say, “Its knowledge is with my Lord alone. None but Him can reveal its time. It weighs heavily upon the heavens and the earth; it will come suddenly.” They ask as if you are eager to know. Say, “Its knowledge is with Allah alone, but most people do not realize it.”

And the Hour is coming, no doubt about it, and Allah will raise those in the graves.

And when it was said, “Allah’s promise is true, and the Hour is coming, no doubt about it,” you said, “We do not know what the Hour is. We think it is only speculation, and we are not convinced.”

And what will make you realize that the Hour may be near?

But the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more severe and bitter.

"Do they feel secure that Allah’s overwhelming punishment will not come upon them, or that the Hour will not strike suddenly while they remain unaware?"

If only the disbelievers knew that when the Fire cannot be warded off from their faces or backs.

But they deny the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a blazing fire.

The Hour is coming; there is no doubt. But most people do not believe.

But the disbelievers will remain in doubt until the Hour overtakes them suddenly, or the punishment of a barren Day descends upon them.

Are they waiting for the Hour to come upon them suddenly? Its signs have already come. But how will they remember when it arrives?

Burn in it, whether you bear it patiently or not, it is the same. You are only being repaid for what you used to do.”

Say, “Imagine if His punishment comes by night or day, what part of it will the guilty seek to avoid?”

For the wrongdoers is a share like the share of those before them, so let them not seek to hasten it.

Do they seek to hasten Our punishment?

Those who do not believe in it seek to hasten it, while those who believe are apprehensive of it, knowing it to be the truth. Indeed, those who dispute the Hour are lost.

Will you believe in it only when it happens? Now? Yet you used to demand it impatiently.

Then they will say, “Can we have a little more time?”

Woe to the disbelievers on the Day they are promised.

Punishment Delayed full verses back to top

Had it not been for a prior decree from your Lord, their punishment would have been immediate.

They say, “O Allah, if this is truly from You, then rain down stones upon us or bring us a painful punishment.”

But Allah would not punish them while you were among them, nor would He punish them while they sought forgiveness.

Yet what prevents Him from punishing them now? They hinder others from the Sacred Mosque, though they are not its rightful guardians. Its true guardians are the righteous, but most of them do not know.

We will indeed lift the torment a little, but you will return to your ways.

We delay it only for a set time.

If We delay their punishment for a time, they will say, “What holds it back?” But when it comes, it will not be averted, and what they mocked will surround them.

We had established them in ways We have not established you. We gave them hearing, sight, and hearts. But neither their hearing, nor their sight, nor their hearts availed them at all, since they rejected Allah’s signs. And what they used to mock engulfed them.

If We grant a person mercy and then withdraw it, they become desperate and ungrateful.

But if We grant them prosperity after hardship, they say, “Troubles have left me,” and they become boastful and proud.

Except for those who are patient and do good, these will have forgiveness and a great reward.

If Allah were to punish people for what they’ve earned, He wouldn’t leave a single creature on earth. But He delays them for a set time. When their time comes.

Your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful. If He were to punish them immediately for their deeds, He would hasten their doom. But He has set an appointed time, from which they will find no escape.

If Allah were to punish people for their wrongdoing immediately, He would not leave a single creature on earth. But He grants them respite until their appointed time. When their time comes, they cannot delay it nor hasten it.

Warn people of the Day when punishment will come upon them, and the wrongdoers will plead, “Our Lord, grant us a brief delay so we may respond to Your call and follow the messengers.” But it will be said, “Did you not swear before that you would never perish?”

Each of them wishes to live a thousand years, but even a long life will not save them from punishment.
