Joseph's Father
“Return to your father and say, ‘O our father, your son has stolen. We testify only to what we know, and we could not guard against the unseen.’”
12:81Return unto your father and say: O our father! Lo! thy son hath stolen. We testify only to that which we know; we are not guardians of the Unseen.
“Ask the town where we were and the caravan we travelled with, they will confirm we speak the truth.”
12:82Ask the township where we were, and the caravan with which we travelled hither. Lo! we speak the truth.
Their father said, “No! Your souls have enticed you into something. But patience is beautiful. Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me. He alone is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”
12:83(And when they came unto their father and had spoken thus to him) he said: Nay, but your minds have beguiled you into something. (My course is) comely patience! It may be that Allah will bring them all unto me. Lo! He, only He, is the Knower, the Wise.
He turned away and lamented, “Oh, my sorrow for Joseph!” His eyes turned white with grief, but he suppressed his anguish.
12:84And he turned away from them and said: Alas, my grief for Joseph! And his eyes were whitened with the sorrow that he was suppressing.
They said, “By Allah, you will not stop remembering Joseph until you waste away or perish.”
12:85They said: By Allah, thou wilt never cease remembering Joseph till thy health is ruined or thou art of those who perish!
He replied, “I only express my sorrow and grief to Allah, and I know from Him what you do not.”
12:86He said: I expose my distress and anguish only unto Allah, and I know from Allah that which ye know not.
“O my sons, go and search for Joseph and his brother. Do not despair of Allah’s mercy, only those who reject faith despair of His mercy.”
12:87Go, O my sons, and ascertain concerning Joseph and his brother, and despair not of the Spirit of Allah. Lo! none despaireth of the Spirit of Allah save disbelieving folk.
When they returned to Joseph, they pleaded, “O noble one, hardship has struck us and our family. We have brought meagre goods, please grant us full measure and be charitable to us. Allah rewards those who give.”
12:88And when they came (again) before him (Joseph) they said: O ruler! Misfortune hath touched us and our folk, and we bring but poor merchandise, so fill for us the measure and be charitable unto us. Lo! Allah will requite the charitable,
He asked, “Do you remember what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?”
12:89He said: Know ye what ye did unto Joseph and his brother in your ignorance?
They gasped, “Are you truly Joseph?” He said, “I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has been gracious to us. Whoever is mindful and patient, Allah never lets the reward of the righteous go to waste.”
12:90They said: Is it indeed thou who art Joseph? He said: I am Joseph and this is my brother. Allah hath shown us favour. Lo! he who wardeth off (evil) and endureth (findeth favour); for lo! Allah loseth not the wages of the kindly.
They admitted, “By Allah, He has favoured you over us, and we were indeed mistaken.”
12:91They said: By Allah, verily Allah hath preferred thee above us, and we were indeed sinful.
He said, “No blame upon you today. May Allah forgive you, He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.”
12:92He said: Have no fear this day! May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
“Take my shirt and place it over my father’s face, his sight will return. Then bring your family to me.”
12:93Go with this shirt of mine and lay it on my father's face, he will become (again) a seer; and come to me with all your folk.
As the caravan departed, their father said, “I sense Joseph’s scent, though you may think me deluded.”
12:94When the caravan departed their father had said: Truly I am conscious of the breath of Joseph, though ye call me dotard.
They said, “By Allah, you are still lost in your old longing.”
12:95(Those around him) said: By Allah, lo! thou art in thine old aberration.
But when the bearer of good news arrived, he placed the shirt over his face, and his sight was restored. He exclaimed, “Did I not tell you that I know from Allah what you do not?”
12:96Then, when the bearer of glad tidings came, he laid it on his face and he became a seer once more. He said: Said I not unto you that I know from Allah that which ye know not?
They pleaded, “O our father, seek forgiveness for us, we were truly in error.”
12:97They said: O our father! Ask forgiveness of our sins for us, for lo! we were sinful.
He said, “I will ask my Lord to forgive you, He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
12:98He said: I shall ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Lo! He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
When they entered Joseph’s presence, he embraced his parents and said, “Enter Egypt in peace, if Allah wills.”
12:99And when they came in before Joseph, he took his parents unto him, and said: Come into Egypt safe, if Allah will!
He raised his parents to the throne, and they all bowed before him. He said, “O my father, this is the fulfilment of my dream from before. My Lord has made it come true. He was kind to me when He freed me from prison and brought you from the desert after Satan had sown discord between me and my brothers. My Lord is subtle in His plans, He is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”
12:100And he placed his parents on the dais and they fell down before him prostrate, and he said: O my father! This is the interpretation of my dream of old. My Lord hath made it true, and He hath shown me kindness, since He took me out of the prison and hath brought you from the desert after Satan had made strife between me and my brethren. Lo! my Lord is tender unto whom He will. He is the Knower, the Wise.
"My Lord, You have granted me authority and taught me the wisdom of interpreting dreams. Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my guardian in this life and the next. Let me depart in submission to You and unite me with the righteous."
12:101O my Lord! Thou hast given me (something) of sovereignty and hast taught me (something) of the interpretation of events - Creator of the heavens and the earth! Thou art my Protecting Guardian in the world and the Hereafter. Make me to die muslim (unto Thee), and join me to the righteous.
